it will not quicken the time by very much. Pearl Barley needs to rehydrate in liquid to soften. You can soak it the night before to help reduce cooking time greatly however. Don’t grind it down you’ll end up with coarse or fine flour depending on how long you process it. Cutting something in smaller pieces in many cases does reduce cooking time. But the exceptions are dried beans, dried lentels (dahl), wild rice, white and brown rice,and pearl barley. I’m sure I’ve left out others but you get the idea. Go with parboiled products to reduce cooking time because the packers have cooked them once already. Example; Minute Rice, is a parboiled product and takes only a few minutes to cook it, but parboiled products lack most of their nutritional value.
