The short answer is yes, you can certainly travel to Spain on your UK passport with no issues whatsoever, and in the days of Ryanair and Easyjet, with a bit of planning you can do so very cheaply. If you are going to be staying long-term, you SHOULD eventually apply for residency, but that is a relatively simple matter for a UK national. And many people don’t bother, and generally don’t have significant problems. I have certainly never heard of a British citizen being deported.
