TOPEKA | Nearly 15 percent of employees at the Hallmark Cards Inc. plant in Topeka have accepted a buyout deal offered by the company. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported on its Web site that Hallmark spokeswoman Julie O’Dell said it’s not yet clear if there will be “any additional impact” at the plant, which employs 680 people. In April, Hallmark said it would reduce its U.S. work force by 550 to 750 jobs. It said it would see how many workers accepted the severance package before determining the number of layoffs. At that time, the company planned to cut between 350 and 450 jobs from its manufacturing and distribution operations in Liberty, Mo.; Enfield, Conn.; Center, Texas; Metamora, Ill.; and the Kansas communities of Lawrence, Leavenworth and Topeka.
