Can I get the D16XD and D32XD to trigger recording at a certain sound level?

Yes this is possible. On P65 of the manual you can set the dB threshold of the trigger to start the recording process. You can also set the pre trigger time in milliseconds (ms) so no parts of the initial note are lost.
