Can I get breast reduction/lift and weight loss surgery on the NHS?

I used to work on a local NHS panel that decided whether people should be allowed breast reduction and weight loss surgery on the NHS so I hope I can help (I was a secretary writing down all the notes, so I’m not a doctor, but I did it for 2 years). I think you have a good chance for various reasons. The correct way to ask for this is to go to your GP and ask that he write to your local PCT (primary care trust) to tell them that in his opinion you need this surgery. You have a good case for the weight reduction because you have had medicine prescribed in the past. They will only approve surgery (stomach stapling etc) if you can prove that you have tried absolutely everything else. They will also only approve it if you can prove that you are suffering mental health problems because of your weight. Ask your GP to refer you to a psychiatrist who can assess this – this will need to be done because the Panel will ask to see evidence from a psychiatrist regarding your mental health. Regardin

Sorry but at 17 it is ridiculous to even think of having weight loss surgery. It is not popssible to try to do something. Trying is just another way of not doing. Be honest with yourself. MOst of the information we are given about food is just plain wrong and its why so many people fail to lose weight. People make lots of mitakes – like trying to cut calories but then end up eatng lots of food that just leaves them bungry, or cut fat and then end up eating way too many carbohydrates. Food sensitivites can also lead to stubborn weight gain. If you want to mail me and tell me what you have been eating and what approaches you have tried I may be able to give you some insight as to why it’s not working.

Hello I went through a kinda similar thing to you- I wanted to get a cosmectic procedure done on the NHS due to health reason (I won’t go into details). And after having lots of meetings with my doctor about it, it was you can only have a cosmectic procedure (which breast reduction comes under) if it is causing serious health/mental problems. You will need to discuss the issue with your GP as they can refer you on if you are able to get it. Also have you looked into the reasons why you can’t loose weight-you may have an underlying problem- you may want to talk about this to your GP as well.
