Yes, you can just take the pre-licensing class. I don’t know if NY classes are the same as Maine, but when I took the class it was three days long. I believe in Maine they only offer the class twice a year but they may offer it more in NY. I didn’t see it listed on the education calendar on this website: http://www.iiaba.net/ny/default?ContentPreference=NY&ActiveTab=STATE&ActiveState=NY but it says if you have any questions to e-mail the Education Department of the New York State Insurance Department at coned@ins.state.ny.us . They should be able to tell you when/where the next class is. Good luck!
