Can I forward my UW email to a personal email account (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.)?
If you are a UW employee (faculty, staff, or student employee) and you forward your UW email to your personal email account, you may put yourself and the University at substantial risk because the “End User Agreements” you sign to use those personally contracted services do not provide necessary provisions to comply with state and federal laws, regulations, and procedures. On the other hand, when your UW email is handled by a UW contracted cloud provider, the provider is contractually obligated to handle security, privacy, public disclosure requests, and other legal issues in coordination with UW personnel. Furthermore, FERPA regulations prohibit using a private email account for sending or storing student educational records, whereas the contracts UW has with the contracted cloud providers do include appropriate FERPA compliance language.
