Can i feed water snails to my musk turtles?
They will probably love it. I feed the small ‘hitchhiker’ type aquarium snails to my musks all the time – instead of trying to rid the aquarium of snails it’s actually a turtle food tank. I’ve tried for years to establish snail colonies in the turtle tanks but the turtles pick them off too quickly. I’ve never had problems with the small rice shaped snails, there are some reports of some of the ramshorns carrying parasitic worms that can in turn infect turtles. There have also been some reports of turtle struggling with the tall cone shaped pointy snails (harder sharper shells). All in all a judgment call but in my experience done carefully a wonderful food addition that encourages natural hunting behavior and provides a free forage type food source – the musks seem to respond more to the snails than other live feeders I’ve tried, in part because their movement really suits these bottom walking turtles.
