You can take the written test online from the same driving school you’re planning to use for the road test. If you’re not using a school for the road test, you can signup for just the written test and take it online and then you take your Certification papers with you to DMV when you’re ready to take the road test.

Yes your theory test is only valid for two years, so before applying for your test make sure you can pass the practical part of your test before applying for your written side of the test.
