You can use your Foreign licence or International driving permit to drive a car in the UK for up to 12 months from the date of your first entry in the UK, after that you will need to apply for a provisional licence and pass the UK driving test. Leaving the country and returning a few months later, does not add another 12 months to the period you are allowed to drive in the UK with a foreign licence. Foreign Licence and Driving test advice.
