Can I drive in Italy with my own driving licence?
Licenses are available to people 18 or older and last 10 years for people up to 50 years old, 5 years for people over 50 and 3 years for people over 70. Your driver’s license should always be carried with you when you’re driving as the police have the right to sequester your car if they find you driving without one. • EU citizens: as stated by the EU, law 91/439/CEE, Europeans holding a driving licence issued by an EU member state can drive in Italy with the driving licence they own. • Non EU citizens: non EU citizens can drive in Italy with their driving licence (including international one), no longer than 1 year after taking up Residency. By that time, it is mandatory to sit a driving test (both theory and practice) to apply for an Italian driving licence. Non EU citizens holding a licence issued by a non EU country which has a special agreement with Italy, (and it is NOT the case of the US) have the right to obtain an Italian driving licence without conducting any driving test.
