My first two years of college were as an architecture student. So here are some lessons from my misadventure: Draw a lot. And a lot of different things. You might think that architecture equals drafting, but it doesn’t. It is an art and you have to work to develop your creativity. Think outside the box. Try ideas before you dismiss them. But remember, don’t try to reinvent the wheel every time. Sometimes the methods of the past are taught because they really work, not just because they are the fashion of the time. They also give you a place to start, which you can then use to get new and creative ideas. Pay attention to people and what they do. Architecture isn’t just visual candy, it serves a practical purpose. Design is how people interact with their environment. If your design is the most beautiful thing ever created but doesn’t address the needs of the client you are designing for, it is not good architecture.
