Can I cut threads on a Sherline CNC lathe?
Yes, but not using CNC. Cutting threads on a lathe requires a direct relationship between spindle speed and movement of the tool. Manually this is done with a set of gears. In CNC this is done by means of accurate encoders on the spindle and Z-axis in order to maintain the relationship between the two during cutting. EMC does not yet have the provision to accept the input from these encoders. Because CNC threading is not a common operation, we felt it would unnecessarily increase the cost of the system for all users to incorporate this function when only a few would use it. However, threads can still be cut, but not using CNC. You can still cut them manually using the P/N 3100 threading attachment and the handwheels. NOTE: Threads can be milled on a Sherline CNC mill using the A-axis and Z-axis.
