You’ll need to buy the mini-DVI dongle for your iMac to get a port to which you can connect a DVI-equipped LCD monitor. Note that if you bought the cheapest intel 17″ iMac, the one with an embedded Intel GPU (instead of a Radeon card), you may be out of luck and stuck with mirror-only.
