Can I convert my cell phone charger connector into a data cable?

Since the charging cable utilizes two wires and the data within a USB cable is sent on two wires – you could re-wire the extra charging cable as a data cable. But, look closely at the connector that attaches to the phone… does it have “unused” or nonexistent pins? You will know by looking at where it attaches to the phone, i.e. the jack on the phone. More than likely there are more contact points than the charger’s plug utilizes (the phone can’t switch between power and data internally – it is done by using different contacts within the jack). So even though you could modify the cable by wiring in a standard USB plug to the end (after removing the “wall-wart”) the problem will be that the wires in the cable itself terminate at the wrong contacts within the plug itself. If you think you can re-wire that plug without destroying it – than it can be done. Anything can be done! Good Luck! I linked an article all about USB (you might have already viewed).
