Can I convert a ceiling light fixture to light kit for a ceiling fan?
I have done this several times. There are a few things to be aware of: 1) ALWAYS be sure the power is off in that room. (Not just the switch on the wall, but the power to te whole room) 2) Make sure that the the junction box in the ceiling (where you are going to screw the lamp support into) is NOT PLASTIC – plastic can break and sag over time. You want to be attaching to a metal box. (Others may disagree with this; plastic is pretty strong these days, metal is superior) 3) Make sure that the box is will and solidly anchored to the ceiling joist. A loose box means a jiggling fan, and you don’t want that. 4) It is useful, although not required, that you have someone to hlp you. Otherwise you will be up and down the ladder dozens of times. 5) FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS – don’t skip steps. Pay *very close* attention to how the wiring is supposed to be connected. Most ceiling fans offer you options – have the fan controlled by wall switches versus the pull chains – but you need to be paying att
just take down your light and the ceiling fan will work on the same wires, they come color coded to match what is at the light now, just make sure that the electrical box where the light came off of, is secured to a beam, you may have to put a few longer screws in to secure it better to the wood. Then just match the wires and you have it, really easy on a scale 1-5, 1 being easy, id vote it a 2, simple should take about 10 minutes to do…
