As a surviving spouse, you may continue the existing Duke health and/or dental plans. Spouses become ineligible if they remarry. Dependents become ineligible if they marry and/or reach the age of 19, or 26 if enrolled in school full time. Coverage may be limited to a maximum of 36 months depending upon the employee’s status at the time of death. A survivor may continue vision care under COBRA. Contact the HRIC for further information. Can I continue my existing Health Care reimbursement accounts? Yes, under COBRA until the end of the plan year in which the employee died or up to the annual election, for any qualified expenses incurred up to the date of death. Claims must be submitted by April 15th for expenses incurred through the prior plan year. Expenses incurred for dependent care may be submitted for reimbursement from the dependent care reimbursement account for expenses incurred up through the end of the plan year.
