Can i connect a 20 pin psu connector to a 24 pin socket on my motherboard safely?
hi mate in a word ,no, motherboards use 20pin and 24pin for specific reasons, the 20pin connector which is found on all motherboards supplies the power to the core components of the motherboard were as the extra 12v 4pin connector is used to supply additional power to the 12v rail, and some motherboard will say it supplies extra power to the cpu, however the main use of the 12v 4pin connector is to support power supplies with the “remote on/off” feature now what would happen if you didnt use the 12v 4pin connector, well theres a good chance you may damage your motherboard from uneven and incorrect voltages however there has been instances were pc builders have simply forgot to plug the 4pin connector in and their p.c,s ran fine ! in reflection i have found it depends on the specific motherboard, one may run fine without the 12v 4pin connector were another may fail to boot ,for good and then again theres the power supply wattage to consider,so my advice is either dont run the pc without the
