According to the CA EDD website: Individuals should apply for benefits as soon as they are unemployed, or working less than full-time. All claims are effective on the Sunday prior to applying for benefits, and have a one week unpaid waiting period. The waiting period does not begin until the claim is filed. So, if you cannot file until you are unemployed, and there is a week waiting period, you would be employed before your claim became active. However, there’s no harm in asking EDD. You will also need to show that you lost your job through “no fault of your own,” in order to get payment. So if you were fired or quit your job (as opposed to layoffs, say), then you should also discuss how they determine fault.
