Can I change my tax status on my W4 form to exempt online or do I have to mail the IRS the new form?

Dear S: Why would you claim exempt unless your dad is going to pick up the tab next Apr 15. You may have a tax liability especially since your dad is claiming you. It has been my experience that single 0 or 1 is the best. If you only plan on making $5000 or less, claim exempt. If your employer allows a change to the W4 on line, you can do that. Otherwise a new W4 at your work place will be required. The IRS never sees the W4 only the end result-with holding. This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written and it applies to the facts that you provided. Click on my profile to read more.

The W-4 form goes to your employer, not the IRS. Some will let you update it online, others require paper.

You can download W-4 from irs.gov. But you have to file it with your employer, not the IRS (unless you work for the IRS).
