Can I break my lease for a college transfer to a different city?
Most leases do have a clause regarding a change of residence for work or education, such as you describe. Give the landlord plenty of notice so he can try to rent the property. If he’s reasonable and the property rents, there should be no problem. If you have a copy of your lease, check it for this clause. If you have a problem with the landlord, contact your local landlord/tenant authority for help. Give written notice as well as by phone call. Start off by telling the landlord how much you have enjoyed living in your apartment and that you will miss the area when you move. Then explain the reason for the move and close by stating that you will gladly cooperate in any effort to rent the property by making sure it is available for showing to a prospective tenant. Thank him in advance for his cooperation in this matter and say you appreciate his understanding of your situation. A spoonful of sugar really does help the medicine go down.
