Can I become a department certified interpreter or translator without taking a department examination?
There are three ways that you may gain department recognition as an interpreter or translator without taking the department’s certification examinations. (1) If you hold either a state of Washington office of the administrator for the courts interpreter certificate or a federal court interpreter certificate, the department will recognize you as a certified social services interpreter without requiring you to take its examination. However, you must formally submit a written request for recognition and attach a photocopy of your official certificate. (2) If the American Translators Association (ATA) accredits you as a certified translator, the department will recognize you as a certified translator without requiring you to take its examination.
