Can I be vegetarian in Ugunja?
This will depend upon where you are staying, your personal feelings and your motivation. If you are cooking for yourself than you can definitely remain a vegetarian here. There are plenty of beans, nuts, eggs and legumes available. If you are eating with a family, you will need to decide if you are meeting your nutritional needs or not. You may find that since meat is relatively expensive, many meals are vegetarian. When eating at people’s homes in the community (for example, while doing field work), meat will likely be served. Your host might be serving meat out of respect for you and the other UCRC staff. Talk to others about how to politely refuse. If you can alert your host ahead of time about your dietary needs, they will likely appreciate your honesty and will try to accommodate your needs. In general, you will find that some weeks you feel you are getting an adequate amount of nutrients and other weeks you will not. If you have concerns, feel free to talk to your family and arra
