Can I be certified above 2nd degree black belt at a later date?

It is customary in the martial arts to certify only up to one degree below your own rank. Since I am a 3rd degree black belt I certify up to 2nd degree. However, I know of other instructors and organizations that will gladly rank you further at your own pace.
