Can I apply for green card status whilst in the US on an E2 visa?

It is not possible to apply for a green card i.e. US permanent residence on the basis that one has a E2 status. A petition for green card status may be filed if the E2 beneficiarys circumstances changed such as in the case of a marriage to a US citizen.
