Can I alter larger tooling to fit in the toolpost?

We do not recommend altering any tools or toolbits to fit. Most tools are semi-hardened shanks and are hard to cut and trying to cut the shanks will remove the strengthing heat-treated into them. If the toolpost if machined to 3/8 tooling and you should have 1/4 tooling, we do recommend the use of packing strips under the tooling (which should be steel material) to bring the tip up to lathe center.
