We strongly recommend building an expansion sleeve: http://csa.compaq.com/CSA_For_iPAQ_Developers.shtml. A simple expansion sleeve requires very little more than a PIC serial EEPROM (for identification) and a few resistors/caps to pull up the correct lines.
