I think a human-chimp hybrid is entirely possible. We share 98% of our genetic material with chimps – we are more closely related to them than, for example, a horse and a donkey are to each other, and they are able to breed (though the offspring are sterile). It’s true that humans and chimps are placed in different genera, but this is probably more to do with human arrogance than to the relationship between the species – we like to think of ourselves as being different and superior to all other animals, so we place ourselves in a seperate genus. Given how closely related we are to chimps and bonobos, we should probably be placed in the same genus from a biological point of view. Cross-genus matings between animals in the same family can sometimes produce offspring in any case. It would be difficult to predict how a human-chimp hybrid would look or behave, but it would more than likely be sterile, as hybrids usually are.
