Can Horses Mate With Zebras?

In general, members of different species cannot, and do not, mate with one anther. But in a few very rare instances, very closely related species may have the potential to interbreed. For example, horses, donkeys and zebras do have the potential to interbreed, and so also do lions and tigers, and bison and cattle. The resultant offspring of a zebra crossed with any other equine is referred to as a zebra hybrid, and these have also been referred to as “Golden Zebras”, maybe because a zebra crossed with a brown horse has beautiful brown and gold stripes, and is very distinctive. It tends to be zebra males that are used for the production of these hybrids, as zebra females are needed for the production of pure-bred zebras. The zebra hybrids are typically smaller than most horses, due to the smaller stature of the zebra. It is a little harder to fit a saddle to a zebra hybrid, because, unlike the horse, the zebra does not have withers.
