Can high power amplifers (HPAs) or low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) be employed as part of the approach to meet the program metrics?
Although use of HPA’s in Tx links and LNAs in Rx links are not unconditionally deemed nonresponsive, in principle they are not within the spirit of the BAA. Furthermore, development of electronic amplifiers is not envisaged as part of TROPHY and funding is not likely to be available for such development. Also, in the case of Rx links, placing an LNA before the modulator increases the aperture complexity and DC power requirements, and so could substantially reduce the utility of the fiber optic approach and the ability to meet the stated program goals and objectives.
