He turns 42 this season and has already won 347 games. Players are persisting deeper into their forties than ever before, and Maddux does not need velocity to succeed. So, given continued health and another half-decade, it could happen — if Maddux wants to keep playing that long. Padres manager Bud Black said, “A lot of times it’s not easy to win one game in the big leagues, let alone 400, but I could see it happening if he wanted to continue.” One thing’s for sure — Maddux’s enthusiasm for the game hasn’t waned. He gets to the clubhouse earlier than most players and still enjoys what some would consider the game’s drudgery, from side sessions to throwing batting practice. He seems to be having fun, regardless of what further milestones he may or may not be able to reach.
