Can governors apply for time off to complete their duties?
Under Section 50 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, employers must give employees who are governors, reasonable time off to carry out their duties. However the definition of ‘reasonable’ is left to the employer and is subject to the particular circumstances of the employer’s business. The time off may be with pay but employers do not have to offer this. The Governor Development Team will be happy to speak to any employers about how the role of being a governor can also benefit the employer. The Team will also provide letters confirming a governor’s appointment.
