By Rebecca Logan Alaska Standard Contributor I recently had a friend tell me that the local PTA’s had received a $250,000 federal grant to be used toward increasing parental involvement in their children’s educational activities. At the time, I thought that it might be challenging to actually develop a program that increased parental involvement. I have always felt that parental involvement, or lack of, was a significant factor in the outcome of a child’s education. But I have never felt that it was an issue that could be addressed by anyone but the parents themselves. The state of Colorado has recently decided that government can influence parent’s behavior– and they have passed a law to attempt to do so. The Parental Involvement Act states that beginning in August of 2009, Colorado employers must provide employees with up to 18 hours of unpaid leave per academic year to participate in their children’s academic activities.
