Can fuel blivets be used to store or transport water to soldiers in the field?
In regards to your question with the storage of water in 50K tanks, IAW the March 1986 version of TB MED 577 chapter 7 page 7-1 allows for their use under certain strict conditions. TB Med 577 further states that if these containers have been used previously as fuel containers they will only be used “in extreme emergencies under combat operations when suitable potable and non-potable water containers are not available.” Currently this TB MED is under revision and is only in draft form. However the draft states that “Tankers, trailers, drums, cans, pumps, or other containers or equipment intended or previously used for storage or distribution of petroleum products or other material not intended for human consumption will NOT be used for storage or distribution of potable water under any circumstances.
