Can Folic Acid Supplementation in Pregnancy Cause Autism?
You will never find an evidence on Folic Acid being a major cause of Autism. Folic acid is the supplement that prescribed to help in the growth of the babies cell and increase the process the cell formation. According to me, I will consider that Folic acid can cause Autism in the baby.
Folic acid is a B vitamin. Since the late 1980`s it has been recognised that pregnant patients who supplemented their pregnancies with vitamins had fewer children born with spina bifida. This led to the U.S. government recommending folic acid supplementation for all pregnancies in 1992. Vitamin supplementation is also recommended for women attempting to conceive. Since 1987 U.S. government figures have confirmed the increasing prevalence of autism. The increasing prevalence remains mystifying. There are several theories which have been proposed including dietary changes, immunisations, assortative mating and use of alcohol or illicit drugs. None of the theories have been proven. Autism remains an emotive issue and one must tread carefully before forwarding further theories.
