Can foam be painted or is there another coating?

Jonathan writes from Waterbury, Vermont: “I have exposed mostly above grade but some below poured concrete foundation. I was hoping to install some type of exterior insulation. Would the Foamular 150/250 work? Could it be glued directly onto the exterior foundation? Once installed could it just be painted or is there another type of coating?” Answer: FOAMULARĀ® 150 and 250 insulations are both used in this type of application. It may be adhered; however the adhesive needs to be compatible with extruded polystyrene, which generally means it should not be petroleum based. Your local building code may not permit the FOAMULAR insulation to simply be painted. It is generally covered with wood, vinyl siding or a concrete-like material.
