The observed afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), in particular the afterglow of GRB 970228 after 6 months, seem to rule out, as the origin of GRBs, relativistic fireballs driven by the mergers or accretion-induced collapse of compact stellar objects in galaxies.
