Yes. Subject to certain limited exceptions, as soon as a bankruptcy petition is filed, the automatic stay takes effect, pursuant to 11 U.S.C. § 362. The automatic stay protects the debtor and their property by stopping creditor harassment and collection efforts such as garnishments, foreclosures, and sheriff’s sales.
