Can feature films build peace in the same way documentaries can?
JM: I understood what he was saying but I disagree with him. I think there is evidence for example that Ghandi was used in some of the Baltic states just before the tumbling of the Iron Curtain. And there are some researchers who argue that places like Lithuania had a more peaceful revolution because that film had been shown regularly. So I think Ghandi, and specific scenes in Ghandi where he stands up to violent power but in a non-violent way, are very impressive. Alongside Ghandi, I think Romero would go on my list. Romero was the Salvadorian archbishop. It’s interesting here was an academic who in many ways was happier with books and yet was thrown into a position of leadership and yet did stand up to power in a caring way, a respectful way. SB: How about something like Apocalypse Now? Some people might think that certain parts of it glorify war. But I felt that it shows the horror of war. In fact, when he was initially no allowed to make the film his young colleague George Lucas de
