Hello. Torture may make someone numb. Multiple Personality Disorder and many other syndromes (Post Traumatic Stress, Depersonalization Disorder and so on) can occur after a major traumatic event or series of events. The psyche shuts off things into the unconscious that the conscious personality does not want to be aware of. This is the ‘numbness’ that you speak of. It’s actually a lack of awareness of the split off (emotionally damaged) part of the psyche. Interesting stuff though I agree.
