Can Evan or Ryan be a unisex name?
Any name can be unisex, simply because there is no law preventing parents from giving boys’ names to girls – and, oh, they do! Parents name girls things like Aubrey, Tristan, and Dylan every day. Notice that they never give boys’ names to girls…because girls’ names have cooties? Because anything attached to a female is inherently lesser and not worthy of imitation? I don’t like the double standard. If I met a female Evan or Ryan, I wouldn’t like the name, but I wouldn’t blame the girl. I would know it was her parents’ choice. I’m not sure how they would act. I know a couple of sisters named Devon and Aubrey, both arguably male names, and they are both tall, heavy, outgoing, and very fashion-conscious. I don’t know if that helps here, but it’s all I have. Surnames are, arguably, more truly unisex than are traditional boys’ names. Yes, then, Taylor, Brown, or Smith would be less masculine than Ryan or Evan.
