Can Eric Cantona really be considered a top player?
He was a top player by any standard. He might have scored only 5 in european games for United in 16 appearances but he got 82 in total from 185 appearances in 5 seasons. Even the ‘great’ Ronaldo was just ahead with 118 in 292 appearances (that’s 107 matches more than Cantona and only 36 more goals). Ronaldo could not salvage the CL final for united in May! Even Torres has off days but he’s still a top player. Cantona’s goal ratio for Man U – 0.44 Ronaldo’s goal ratio for Man U – 0.41 Torres’ goal ratio for Liverpool – 0.37 You also have to remember that Cantona fell out of favour with French coach Aimé Jacquet after the infamous kungfu moment that led to his suspension and was never pick for that national team again even though he was arguably the best striker in the EPL at the time.
