Can enhancements or treatments be detected?
This depends on the individual type of treatment. Heat treatment is, in most cases, difficult if not impossible to detect. Occasionally, heat treatment may be suspected due to an inclusion such as air or carbon exploding during re-heating resulting in microscopic fractures or feathering. Other methods such as oiling may be detected by a greasy feeling on the stone, while an ultraviolet light may be used to detect the use of some resins. Color enhancement via other methods such as diffusion can be detected, but the detection procedure will usually result in destruction or serious damage to the gemstone.
