Can electronic records be used as evidence?
As stated above, both hard copy and electronic records can be used as evidence. However, for electronic records to be of value as evidence, it must contain: • content – The content of the record is accurate and continues to be the accurate accounts of events that took place at a particular time, • context – The record can be placed in a situation in which it was created and can be comprehended using the contents of the record, • structure – The record can be rebuilt electronically if required. The most effective method for protecting the content, context and structure of electronic records is to manage them within a recordkeeping system.
