Can dogs be deaf?
Yes, a dog can be (or become) deaf. Their ears work just as ours do…and can suffer from the same ailments. If you suspect your dog is deaf, you might perform some self-tests (calling your dog for a treat, for instance, while being sure to give NO hand signals/gestures). Your vet should also be able to test this. Even if your dog is deaf, he/she still has the capability to be a wonderful companion — heck, your dog may even be less obnoxious in that he/she won’t hear the neighbors being noisy and so might not bark at the sounds! 🙂 Seriously, though…you can teach a deaf dog anything that you can teach a hearing dog — you just have to substitute verbal commands with gestures. Good luck!
