Can (do) mounain lions climb large trees and stand among the branches?
Answer Dear Melissa Thanks for your question. Mountain lions are highly adaptable and thrive in a variety of habitats. I have looked at several websites to confirm my view that mountain lions can and do climb trees. The sites all agree that mountain lions can climb trees easily, but http://www.nwf.org/wildlife/floridapanther/behavior.cfm states that they do not usually spend much time there. www.scottishbigcats.co.uk/pumaid.htm states that pumas climb trees to chase monkeys and other prey. http://www.lionstigersandbears.org/Info_Puma.html states that pumas climb trees to take refuge when chased by dogs. The puma will stand in or lie on the branches until the dogs have gone. I looked in Google images for pictures of pumas in trees. Several seemed to show a mountain lion in a tree, but the best picture was at library.thinkquest.org/ 11922/cats/puma.htm. I hope this answers your question.
