Each API designation of motor oil is formulated to meet specific performance characteristics. Although oils of the same API designation are usually compatible with one another as well as with other high quality API motor oils of the same designation, it is our recommendation that different API designations not be mixed with each other or with competitor’s products. This will ensure that the performance and API ratings built into each API designation are completely maintained. It is impossible to determine what performance level the oil becomes after mixing two or more API designations together without extensive laboratory testing; therefore, we advise against this practice.
