Can Dietetic Technicians be licensed?

We could write legislation that would include a scope of practice for DTRs. The state of Maine has licensure for DTRs and California has identified areas of practice for this level of Dietetic Practitioner. The important area to consider here is that the DTR works under the direction of the RD. This would be similar to Physician Assistants and MDs, or the relationship of LPNs to RNs. Does the Commission on Dietetic Registration recognize the professional designation RDE? No. The term is not a professional designation/credential. The Commission has noted with concern an increase in the use of the term RDE to designate registration eligibility. Both employers and the public find the term confusing.
