Can diesel engine work if spark plug is there or can gasoline engine work without spark plug ?
Gasoline fuels + mixture MIXTURE will self ignite if compressed too much. So gasoline fuels + air mixture needs to be compresses to certain level (about 9:1) and then ignited by a spark plug (controlled ignition). No spark plug = no ignition / power. In contrast Diesel fuel MIXTURE is NOT really compressed like in gasoline engines. In diesel engine, ONLY THE AIR is super compressed (about 25:1). Then at certain point, the diesel FUEL is injected into the piston of compressed (hot) air and it starts to self ignite. Because the fuel will self ignite it does not need a spark plug. === Contrary to the posting above, diesel fuel is thicker than gasoline, but the air / diesel fuel mixture is MORE prone to knocking. Diesel fuels have octane rating of about 20 or 25. YES TWENTY or TWENTY FIVE. But diesel fuels are rated in cetane. But unlike gasoline, it is MORE desirable for the diesel to SELF IGNITE (read above), because the ignition is controlled by the timing of the diesel injection (not b
