Can detectives wear whatever clothes they like?
It all depends on departmental policy. Many departments have their detectives/investigators wear suits or professional casual attire. Generally, it helps make an already intimidating situation less so when an investigator is wearing something other than a regular uniform. Also, there are times when investigators need to be able to blend in more with the general public than a uniformed officer. Even though investigators dress down, they still have a regular duty uniform. But again, ultimately, it depends on departmental policies.
